Barefoot Wine & Bubbly

Barefoot wines were originally introduced in 1965 by self-taught California winemaker Davis Bynum. After years of making "garage-style" home wines, Bynum opened up a winery in Alameda Davis and released Barefoot Bynum Burgundy for sale in his tasting room only. The Barefoot Bynum wines, with their whimsical barefoot imprint on the label, were a hit and quickly outsold Bynum’s higher priced wines. However, despite the label’s success, Bynum decided in 1973 to focus his energies on his premium wines, and the Barefoot brand lay dormant for over 10 years. In 1986, Michael Houlihan and his partner Bonnie Harvey purchased the brand and set about reviving "the Foot." They launched the new "Barefoot Cellars" with two varietals: Barefoot California Cabernet Sauvignon and Barefoot California Sauvignon Blanc. Looking for a way to combine sales with supporting local charities, Houlihan hired Randy Arnold as a "Barefooter" in 1990. Arnold set about enthusiastically making a name for the label by providing wine donations to non-profit events. The winery’s dedication to grassroots causes grew along with the rest of the business, and today Barefoot is involved in thousands of charitable events worldwide.

Ste. Michelle Wine Estates is the ‘String’. Our collection of estate wineries are the ‘Pearls.’ We call this our ‘String of Pearls,’ describing a collection of estate wineries whose vineyards produce some of the best wines in the world. Significantly, it also highlights our company philosophy: We believe that each “pearl’s” luster is best revealed when the vineyard and wine-making decisions are made on site by the people who grow the grapes and make the wine. The Ste. Michelle Wine Estates company is simply the “string,” providing administrative and financial support for these extraordinary wine properties. Ste. Michelle Wine Estates President and CEO Ted Baseler notes, “With Chateau Ste. Michelle as our first pearl, over the years we have developed or acquired other wineries that meet our high standards of quality and whose wines are distinctive. These wines reflect the place where they are grown.” From Washington State’s short, warm summers and sparse soil, to the cooler climate and mineral-rich soil of the Willamette Valley to the complex soil and longer, hot summers of the Napa Valley, the terroir of the pearl on our string is as unique as each wine in our portfolio.

Chateau Ste. Michelle is the oldest winery in Washington state with some of the most mature vineyards in the Columbia Valley. The winery’s roots date back to after the Repeal of Prohibition, when the Pommerelle Wine Company and the National Wine Company were formed in 1934. They merged in 1954 to form American Wine Growers and produced mostly fortified sweet wines. In 1967, American Wine Growers began a new line of premium vinifera wines called “Ste. Michelle Vintners” under the direction of legendary California winemaker and consultant Andre Tchelistcheff. Ste. Michelle Vintners planted its first vines at its Cold Creek Vineyard in Eastern Washington in 1972. Cold Creek Vineyard remains one of the oldest and most renowned vineyards in the state. In 1976 Ste. Michelle Vintners built a French style Chateau in Woodinville, outside of Seattle, and changed its name to Chateau Ste. Michelle to reflect its new facility. The winery was built on the 1912 estate owned by Seattle lumber baron Frederick Stimson. The original Stimson family residence still stands on the winery grounds today and is on the National Register of Historical Places. Today, Chateau Ste. Michelle is not only recognized for pioneering vinifera grape growing in the Columbia Valley, but is also a leader in modern day viticultural research. The winery combines an ongoing dedication to research with a commitment to classic winemaking traditions. Known for its highly acclaimed Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet, Chateau Ste. Michelle receives some of the highest accolades in the industry, including “American Winery of the Year 2004” from Wine Enthusiast Magazine and “2005 Winery of the Year” by Restaurant Wine Magazine.
