Planning for the first Festival began in 2002 by Randy Hughes, the current Brew Master at City Brewery and Bob Swenson, a City Brewery retiree. Eleven breweries provided samples to enthusiastic fest goers and a successful festival was born! Today in 2013, the festival continues and has grown in the number of exhibitors and attendees as well as the experience offered to its attendees.
In 2007, City Brewery handed over management of the Festival to the La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. The bureau decided to add wine to the sampling choices and changed the venue to the Southside Oktoberfest Grounds to accommodate the need for more space and the increase in ticket holders due to the addition of wine.
The growth of the Festival since the move has been tremendous. The Festival added VIP ticket sales, the Between the Bluffs Academy with cooking demonstrations and related vendors, Home Brew and Wine Making Contests, and a Bean Bag Tournament. In 2012, the Festival eatured 45 Breweries, 19 Vineyards, and 4 cheese companies. 250 VIP tickets were sold in a record one week time frame, and the remaining general admission tickets sold out.
In 2011, “Taster’s Eve” was created and held the night before the Festival. Taster’s Eve was added to enhance the experience of ticket holders and allows local businesses to be involved in the Festival as well. This event continues in 2013.
